Ideas for Improvement of the Wiki:
- One major theme in the suggestions from this period has to to with organization of content:
- "Because the 'Astronomy and Space' page covers a large range of topics, it is sorta hard to navigate the page an dfind information on certain topics. I think we should instead create individual pages for planets, nebulae, other (asteroids, kuiper belt, oort cloud, etc.) the sun, and other astro/space related topics"
- "I think there could be a bit more organization in the posts. I found it a little hard to see which posts were from the same person or if they were a continuation of the last post."
- "If possible organize all the categories into sub-categories based on whether it's a picture, a link, or a video."
- "Make sure everything is under the right category."
- "We should put up a page for links to what we are learning at the specific time. Right now we would put links on how the Universe was formed, or supernovas. That would really help me."
- "Maybe we can have a page on what we learned (or are going to learn in the future) so we can learn and research it to be ready for class..... And on the page, post some interesting things we learned about the topics."
- "We should take off pages that nobody uses". Done,
- "Make sections to put things in, ex: Page: Astronomy; Subcategory: the Sun. It would make things easier to find and to follow."
- "Organize into little sections (ex. Astro/Space under it is Planets, Moon, Nebulae, Asteroids and Comets, and Stars."
- Lingenheld feedback: Great ideas. Classification of information is an ongoing thread in learning and exploration of all types. I'm way open to an individual or group taking hold of this idea and pushing it forward. I think the hassle factor would be relatively minor, as most content could be copied and pasted from one page to another.
- Another theme that emerged is about formatting and presentation:
- "Same font, color, date, etc."
- "I think we should change the formatting so it is simpler."
- Lingenheld feedback: I am in total agreement that a standard method of formatting would be ideal. One of the challenges here is that the text editor in this program is SUPER basic and annoying, so I think the more basic the formatting standards, the better. Anybody want to make some suggestions, or put together an example of font, size, date, label, etc?
- Other ideas:
- "I think that we should use the wiki more often, but we should try to find different things to use it for. We should explore it more."
- I think that some of the bigger notes should be posted on the wiki to keep everyone up to date on what's happening in class.
- Lingenheld: 'Bigger notes' in terms of actual class notes? I've tried to keep class-specific content on Moodle, mostly for ease of access (PDFs, Word Docs, etc.), so that the Wiki is more of a bonus area- interesting, colorful, and without the baggage of HW, review guides, etc. To me, Moodle is pretty good for daily use, the Wiki is more of a special event. I'm open to feedback, questions, ideas, etc., about this theme of which tech programs work and which don't.
- "Make it more interesting, it's really boring."
- Lingenheld: I'm going to assume that this is is a reference to the 'look & feel' of Wikispaces, as opposed to content-related. There are definitely limits to what this site (wikispaces.com) is able to accomplish, but the benefits include that: it's free, it's fairly user-friendly, it's a host to a few Woo-Wikis (trout tank, English 8, a MS faculty Wiki). I would love to be introduced to any other Wiki-hosting sites, and I'd have to say that I personally think the pros far outweigh the cons in what we've got going.
- "More Pictures"
- "Topic of the Day/Week"
- "Make it more appealing to viewers with pictures/background."
- "I think everybody should make a bigger effort to post things on the wiki."
- "I would try to get students more involved and active to the program by having the website send emails, notifications, or interesting posts."
- "Keep the forum updated and delete all of the photos/videos/navigation tools from September-November."
- "I think it would be good to finish uploading all of our statistics, info, and conclusions from our groups for our autumn empiricism." (I took those down, but can still access them. (Mr. L.)
- "i think on the moon page we should take down some pictures, and maybe we could take down the oksnowberfest page because nobody looks at it anymore"
- Give each class its own page
